The highly logical world of the BIOS.
If you haven't already set the defaults, DON'T. Hopefully you won't need to.
Even if the Floppy drive isn't in the boot sequence, and even if it's disabled, there's more to do.
Device manager is irrelevant here, you need to work just in the BIOS.
There are a couple of settings I can think of you need to look for, one is the obvious Floppy Drive (enable/disable) or similar, but AS WELL as that, many Mobos I've encountered also have a 'Floppy Drive Seek' or similar setting. You need to disable that, and I think that's the one that's causing the error. The mobo is set to look for the drive, doesn't find it, and tells you.
Look in the integrated devices section first I guess. Let us know how you get on.

I have had troubles with the date and time, therefore will change the battery first and see what happens.

Thanks for all the ideas, will let you know.

That's definitely a dead BIOS battery then.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Have now changed the battery and clock is OK but still got the message on 'startup' regarding the non-existant floppy drive.
Therefore followed 'almillar' advice in his post and now all boots up fine.

    Therefore thanks to all,
