When can I switch
Options
I am currently with Powergen who have just informed me that I am £700 in the red after reviewing my direct debit. This seems outrageous that they left it as long before upping my monthly payment. My house is just about 18 months old and I was led to believe that I could not switch suppliers for a 3 year period, can anyone advise me re this.

If you are on a capped tariff, Orza, you would need to check the terms and conditions.
Otherwise http://www.energywatch.org.uk/ would be interested in this restraint to fair trade.
You will have to pay off the £700 before moving.0 -
You're free to switch at any time regardless of whether you are on a capped tariff or not but as Ken68 says you would need to come to an arrangement regarding paying back the balance.
Who advised you that you needed to wait 3 years before you could switch?0 -

It is possible there is a tie although it's not very common, the builders sometimes do this probably to get the installation of meters subsidised. Best bet is to check in your supply contract you should have been sent by Powergen when you moved in and the documents you got from the builder.0
