Tax Rebate - Sticky Situation!

Hi Guys,
I was wondering if you could help me with my situation.
4 months ago i had a letter which was from the HMRC saying that i was due a tax rebate of £1,148. At the time i worked with my now EX that stated she would sort it all out for me.
I owe my mum and dad the majority of the money and since i split with my Ex, i thought i would try sort the situation out myself. I called HMRC last week to find out how i could sort this. They asked if i had any of the paperwork/reference numbers, which i do not have and the ex has probably disposed of! They then stated I wasn't entitled to a rebate.
My ex sent my details of with hers and she stated a few weeks ago she would be getting her rebate in 4 weeks.
A friend of a friend was also told he was not due a rebate on the phone, but sent some details and has now claimed it.
Any Advice would be great as I do not want to have to leave my parents in a financially worse position.
Thanks Wormington90
