Young saver... needing advice from the wise!

Hello everyone!

I've always been rather thrifty, hugely influenced by my mum but I need it now more than ever.

I'm 20 and I live my 23-year-old boyfriend of 3 years. I'm a student and he is a graduate having working in full time employment for 1 1/2 years.

I get almost nothing from the loans company and no other income.

I worked over the summer and earnt a decent amount however that soon went on rent and buying furniture etc for the flat we moved into in August.

I'm trying really hard to save as much as I can.

My boyfriend isn't as intent on saving as I am and spends if he wants whereas I scrutinise the prospective item to see if it's needed.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get him interested in saving?

We have set limits for Christmas presents for both our families and each other which I feel will help us concentrate on getting things we'd really enjoy.

We have a joint account for food and have a strict budget but sometimes I will find he's gone out and bought luxeries like ice cream, which is nice as a treat but I so can't afford it... i'm not talking neopolitan!!

I really want him to get involved, he's saving a certain amount a month but I don't think it's enough compared with his outgoings.:)

Any tips to save on anything welcome, thank you!

Whenever he gets paid, put money into a savings account. He can only spend whats in his account.
