Gas Boiler and Fire Servicing

Hi,

Moved into our home in Dec 2011 and are currently with British Gas for Gas and Electric services.

We do not have any form of their Homecare packages that includes a annual Boiler check. This was mainly due to at the time of purchasing our house we wanted to cut costs at the time, and also our house insurance had an extra included that covered basic fixing the heating should anything go wrong.

Just wondering what is best option:

1) Use an independent gas servicing company (im always paranoid of dealing with cowboys or those more interested in selling me an upgrade/or carrying out un needed repairs)

2) Use British Gas for a one off gas service (does anyone have an idea of how much this costs?)

3) take out their Homecare cover at extra expense (but may work out not much more than a normal service price)

Can anyone give me some advice or if they have had similar experiences?

Thanks

Option one, find a recommended local independent GSR RGI, there are plenty of good ones. Using BG Homecare or Homeserve does not automatically equate to good service or lack of cowboys.
Plenty of tales of woe re both of the above-just do a forum search.
