I Pod Touch

Does anyone know when the latest i pod touch will be available and what are opinions as to whether they are suitable for children under 10.

Any ipod Touch can have full access to the Internet via wifi. Tools for filtering content don't exist on the Touch so you have to arrange this via the internet service provider and any restrictions apply to everyone using the wifi. You can use a Touch without wifi but it can be inconvenient when installing games etc.

The iPod Touch has the option to Proxy any traffic going through it, although admittedly, you would need to either setup or find a childsafe proxy server.

We bought an iPod Touch for my special needs step-daughter last Christmas. It's setup to pass through my proxy server (with filtering) and if she's on an external wifi connection it's set to connect via VPN so she's still pulling traffic via the proxy. If you had access to a web-based proxy the VPN step isn't needed.

As for my daughter she gets on great with it. We popped into a Griffin Survivor case and it's been brilliant.

I've looked on the Settings - general and Safari settings on mine, and I can't find anything that even hints at options for Proxy servers - I fear that everyone around here will need more detail on how this is done.

The latest one might be a bit extreme fora 10 year old unless you know they're really gunna look after it, it will suffer if it's dropped, they can break, although they are reasonable hardy creatures!
I've dropped mine a few times, and now the swivel doesn't work. When you turn the itouch around, it's supposed to turn the screen too (portrait and landscape). It doesn't any more and that was after I dropped it one too many times.
You can get survivor cases brown boxed off amazon pretty cheaply for them, but they do limit using the screen if buttons have been placed on the edge in apps.

When the new one comes out, investigate how much a previous gen would be. You'd save a bit off cash, or look in the supermarkets, they often have deals/vouchers for them, sometimes offers (buy one, get a itunes voucher)

Also just saying that the camera is not that awesome in them, but it's ok. I've seen far worse, but it is a little lacking compared to my phone.
