what would you do if

You sold a laptop on eBay for spares and repairs, and the buyer accused it of being stolen when they received it? A crappy old laptop that sold for a tenner amd is not stolen, by the way.

Ignore them and wait for the next move!
Even if it was stolen, how would they prove it and ebay do not care.
If you try and report stolen property they (ebay) just tell you to contact the police.

It isn't stolen. I told them as such and said they could return it for a refund. They said they could get it to work. I am livid at being accused of being a thief and would welcome them reporting it to the police quite frankly. No doubt they are going to neg or neut me, they seem to do it a lot. Shall l report them to eBay for abusive messages or will it fall on deaf ears?

  • How on earth can they tell it's stolen?

He is saying the hard drive has a pw that has to be entered, my son is saying he took the pw off. He insists there must be one and because l don't know it (sold as spares and repairs only) he has made this wild accusation.

Sorry but that proves nothing, lots of laptops have passwords on boot, encrypted hard drives etc, and guess what the owners forget the passwords. Sounds like you have a "too thick for Ebay buyer".

Simple solution would be to provide the password, I am sure your son will know this if he removed it, as usually you need to enter it to remove it.

Either way I wouldn't be accusing anyone of theft, I agree wild and unfounded accusation. Keep replies factual and polite as hard as that maybe. I would also only communicate via ebay, that way they have a trail and you can attempt to have any neg removed.

Many thanks for your replies. Well it seems that the laptop has had some sort of failure, because the pw my son had previously before he removed it is not working according to him. He has described a blank screen with a padlock on it, DS has said he has never seen such a thing. I have said he can return it for a refund, but he says that he can replace the hard drive and get it working. He is insisting that a pw must have to have been entered every time it was used, but DS is saying this is simply not the case.

I think I will send him a final e mail now saying there is nothing more I can do to help and if he wants to return it fine. I have looked at his fb left for others and there are quite a few negs and neuts in there, so one for the blocked list as well for sure.

Well he has replied saying that everything I have said is a lie and that passwords to not set themselves. I am not speaking to him again but I have reported the string to eBay as I am upset about it. No doubt I will be getting my first neg shortly.

There must be something in the air, had loads of problems with buyers and NPBs this week...!

  • Well no, passwords don't just set themselves up, but just because something has had a password set up on it, does not mean to say it was stolen.

Was he in the queue for numptyness when they were handing out logic?

Well he seems to do it regularly. I don't understand what people like that get out of it. If he really thought it was stolen surely he would report it to the police, or take up my offer of a refund. I've only got his word for it that there is a pw on the hard drice, and l doubt that DS would know how to do such a thing. Maybe he was waiting for me to say 'please don't neg me, have your money back and keep it'. At least people like him are few and far between. Definitely not selling any other electrical items in ebay!
