Log Burning Stove Quote Croydon

Hi,
I've just ordered a survey for installation of a log burning stove from a company I found on google for ball park figure of £2,000 - £2,600 to include the stove and liner etc.
I don't really have much experience in this department being fairly new to home owning and wondered if this was reasonable.
Also, if anybody knew any recommended tradesmen who could provide another quote I would be most grateful.
Thanks!

Depends on the chimney and the 'etc'. I paid £1800 to have fitted a granite outer and inner hearth, stainless steel liner (bungalow) and Charnwood C4 multi-fuel stove. Several shops quoted far more than that, prices often match the affluence of the area. You can work out cost of the stove and hearth easily enough. Fitting the hearth, liner and stove is at least a days work for two people, so say two days work at least, which means £300 to £400.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0

It is a bit difficult to give you a ball park figure, as there are so many sotoves out there ranging in price from £300 to £3,000 without installation.
Check that they are HETAS registered and their installers are too. Also check what grade liner they are going to fit, that also affects the price. Also what they will have to do in order to fit the stove, building wise.
As Leif has already said and out of the posters on here for stoves, Leif is one of the more rational ones and realistic in his/her opinions, it will be subject also to where you live, unfortunately. It seems around London, that some of the retailers think they are on to a killing with fitting stoves, where as 'Oop North' where I am, it is a bit more reasonable, mostly.
Have them come out, get the figure off them and then maybe look at a retailer slightly out of your area, maybe in a less afluent area, you may find you can get the same but a hell of a lot cheaper. If you can get the whole lot done by one outfit, it will stop you having the aggro of buying the stove, then getting the liner, then trying to find someone, qualified who is willing to fit it for you, as a lot won't, due to losing out on any margin they will have got from the products. You also have someone to see face to face, if things aren't right, instead of the usual line of 'not my fault, go back to where you bought it'0 -
Interested here too; I'm down in Dorset and have arranged for several people to come round & quote this week. I want a particular stove fitted where we currently have an open fire, & the big local companies are balking at this; they only want to use the big name stoves, but as far as I can see none of the ones they're offering fit the bill. I suspect their quotes, using their favoured stoves, will be considerably more than I want to pay! But I have one or two HETAS-registered individuals also quoting, who have installed stoves for friends at around or below my budget. It will be interesting to see what the difference is!Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

There seems to be the typical 'North/South Divide ' in the fireplace industry too as I gather over the years.
I have, over my time had many people buying off me in Lancashire and turning up in a rental van at the weekend , to pick up their goods as it was cheaper than buying from down south. I don't know why the retailers do it, TBH. They would get a lot more business and more sales, if they brought their prices down. I know of one retailer, who sells the same brand of fires as I do and is making £400 per fire more than me and is quoting 6 weeks lead time, when the fire only takes 7 days to come in !
As I said above, look at retailers out of your area too, some will fit for you , may charge a little more to cover fuel, but may work out a hell of a lot cheaper. One of my friends regularly fits boilers down in London and he is from Manchester ! He quotes for 2 nights accomodation B&B & EM in Premier inns or suchlike in the price and still gets the jobs !0 -
Another point I forgot to mention is that some do it all in house, some sub-contract out jobs, such as any plastering. Those that are multi-skilled, or have their own in house trades will be cheaper, as you are no in effect paying a middle person to project manage someone else. Also, you can do some work yourself. I remove the fire brick and rubble from the builders opening myself, and I fitted the skirting board myself, using a jig saw to cut it to go round the hearth. Removal of an existing hearth and surround adds cost. I did pay someone to do that, but a year before when I had building work done. I think it was a days work, as I had a large stone surround, 3m long, and a 2m stone hearth. I think I paid £300 which is probably a bit on the high side.

Leif, I'm after a Glastonbury Stoves Typhon (in red) as I want some backup minor cooking facilities; the opening is quite tall & narrow & it's a small room although it has a big, leaky window (original, but well-curtained) & another room opening off it. We produce a fair amount of wood & have plenty in store, but the open fire just eats it up with most of the heat wasted up the chimney at the moment! We're not that far from Glastonbury & do have transport big & tough enough to fetch it ourselves.Angie - GC Aug25: £106.61/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

Just check that you are allowed to burn logs at all in Croydon without a special stove. ISTR at least parts of it were classified as a smokeless zone.0

Some years ago we had two fireplaces and gas "real" fires fitted by a specialist company in Crystal Palace.
A few weeks after they were fitted we could hear crackling and discovered the back of the fireplace and the chimney were alight. Turned out they hadn't used fireproof cement . They would not put the damage right and didn't settle until the day before the case was due to be heard in court.
Whoever you ultimately use try and get personal recommendations .I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

I think you remember correctly. Pretty much all of Croydon is a smoke control area...
