Help, Please!! How do I remove the smell of diesel??

Hi All

Please please help!!

Long story short...

Had a terrible day!!

Soaked to the skin on 3x this a.m, Oh's car has suddenly 'died', and garage have just quoted £950+:eek::eek:
To top it all, whilst doing a good deed, some diesel got spilt in the boot of my car all over several items of clothing , a couple of coats , & the boot carpet:(:(

I've tried all I can think of, but so far nothing seems to be removing the smell!! ( as i type, they are going through their 3rd wash !!)

PLEASE.. if anyone has any ( constructive ) ideas, please share:)

Many thanks in advance

  • I have a book on the uses of vinegar which suggests adding "a little" white distilled vinegar to the washer to remove diesel smells. Sorry there is no more specific measurement of how much "a little" is

I have never tried it, dont know if it would make colour run etc... (and it does state do not mix vinegar with bleach due to dangerous vapours)

    Good luck x

I used to work on an oil refinery and regularly had these types of smells to deal with...unfortunately the only thing that worked after washing was time. I'd leave something outside on the line for a few days or hang somewhere ventilated indoors then wash again. I've tried vinegar, bicarb the whole lot and I could still catch a wiff of the stuff. The odour causing agents are detectable by the human nose down to the part per billion range. (sorry!)

If you can identify the areas that were soaked with diesel try Swarfega rubbed and left overnight to work before washing again

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I did fear as much, as have tried loads of different things.

Some of the things are currently languishing on a very windy, rain-swept washing line, along with the boot carpet which is draped over a couple of sets of ladders propped against the shed ( after OH blast-washed it with the hosepipe !)
