Apprenticeship and help?

Hello all,
I have been on Incapacity benefit or the past 5/6 years and after undergoing an operation, have realized my health will not get any better, so I have gone out into the big world of employment. I would have preferred to have gone to college but it's the wrong time of year and an apprenticeship nursery assistant position has come up, so I thought I'd apply. The only problem is I live alone in a housing association flat. And of course have bills to pay. The apprenticeship will pay £104 a week. Is there any help out there for myself? My condition doesn't come under any DLA conditions (mobility and carers). I wouldn't be able to claim the disability tax credits as I don't come underneath any criteria there either. I'm 22 and hopefully studying for a level 2. If I go on to study a level 3 would that count as new apprenticeship so I would still only get £2.65 an hour?
I really want to do this as this is my dream job into getting into the career I want. But if the benefits calculator was correct, after all my bills being payed I'll be left with around £3 a week.
Any help or thoughts appreciated
Vicky

You might qualify for housing benefit and council tax discount - put your details into the Turn2us online benefit calculator.

You would receive a 50% reduction in your council tax due and you may be able to receive council tax benefit in respect of the remaining 50%.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • I am now going to try the benefits calculator. If you don't mind me asking, why would I get a 50% reduction in my council tax?
    Thanks

You are disregarded as an apprentice - when all of the occupiers are disregarded (and one of the various exemptions does not apply) a 50% reduction is given.

Effectively council tax has 2 components - 50% for the property and 50% for the occupiers and because the occupiers are disregarded you only pay the 50% property part.

  • Thank you CIS. I had no idea. So instead of the 25% deducted for living alone I would get a 50%? I'm just trying to get this all together in my head.

Tried the calculator and said I would most likely be able to claim housing benefits and council tax benefits. But other than that, there is no others. So after all bills being paid and my giving up smoking (will have to do it as will not be able to afford it, or could afford it but be even more worse off) I will have around £12 a week. That's not too bad. As long as no dreadful things happen (fridge breaking etc..) and I can plan in advance to save for things e.g car tax. I'm trying to be positive but £12 a week is not that much. Though I have lived on less and had less. Thanks for helping everyone and if anyone has any other helpful ideas/hints they are welcome to tell
