Jobseekers and mortgage.

Hello, Just wondering if a person is on jobseekers allowance, and that person has a mortgage do they get any help with paying the mortgage?

How long does it usually take to start being paid?

The only help available is Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI), where up to (currently) 3.63 percent of your mortgage interest is paid for two years.

I have no idea in practice, but if it is anything like other benefits payments, a few weeks to a few months.

You will only getting if you are on Income-Based JSA and there is a 13 week waiting period. See the link posted above.
  • JSA has to be the income related one (means tested) - not the contributions type. It is payable after a waiting period of 13 weeks usually, but there are some people who have older mortgages where the waiting time can be much longer (39 weeks). With JSA it lasts for 2 years and currently pays out 3.63% of the interest for your mortgage. So you'd be responsible for capital and any % interest above the DWP set rate. I know all this as I am currently doing exactly this, but with ESA IR SG instead and as I have my award already will not seemingly have to wait those 13 weeks.
So I hope this answers the question.
  • I wasnt aware that people with older mortgages having to wait 39 weeks?
39 weeks used to be the waiting time for all mortgages until the waiting time was lowered
