Thanks for the replies! will be home for 6 days a week but still feel bad leaving a dog! We had our other dog for 4 years and I was at home full time for 3 of those. Husband has 13 weeks holiday and I have 8 not usually together so nearly half a year off between us. we would like a dog who like to come with us wherever in the cars. House and cars dog proof. I wouldn't mind a greyhound but husband feels they are a bit unattractive!! I thing they are fine. We have contacted a rescue about a 2yr old labrador so will wait and see. We are not in any rush. Well we said we would never have another and 9 weeks on we are window shopping!!!

    Unattractive?

I get inundated with people wanting to pet my grey dogdog, but she is somewhat aloof and hates being approached. I am told without fail everytime we go out, that she is beautiful.

I think a greyhound would be fine they have a lovely nature. He is judging a book by its cover. I have told him they will walk and sleep perfect I think. He would like a labrador!! Oh and this is the man who never ever wanted a dog!! And is missing our old dog and the dog walks and waggy tail! and said he would never have another!! I always had a dog as a child and was happy to have one!!

They're unusual looking, but I think they're gorgeous, very 'noble'!

  • We've rescued our last 2 staffies, they are always left at home from 8am to 5pm. We dont visit at lunchtime and he is walked 3.5 miles a day over 2 sessions. Our current one has some anxiety issues and also gets bored so he has made short work of the table leg and skirting, but he took to being crated very well, and loves being in there with his Kong. As long as they are fed, watered and walked I can't see a problem with it :)

He's chunked up a bit since then, he's now around 15 months old so is starting to pack the muscle on, 24kg and not an ounce of fat on him, no idea what he is crossed with but it must've been big :rotfl:

IMO, unless you can provide an active lifestyle, I.e. long walks, Labradors are lovely dogs, but not best suited.

Greys are not always couch potato material. Dog dog is five now, and only just settling down. She loves the car, and loves to be driven, even for a whole day, and she needs a damn good run at least daily....fast, not on a lead, a real blowout, but need not last long.....even ten minutes of blow out can tide her over one a rough day.

Also, they do not all have a lovely nature. Dog dog is sometimes antisocial and hates to be touched without her invitation by strangers. I would say she is funny, love g to us, but pretty much disregards most people out of the family (although she has a cruch on one of our builders in a big way). She is very choosy.

Ultimately, looking at a dogs physical needs.....what sort of dog will cope best with the physical demands of your lifestyle is the first 'edit' of dogs available to you, then personality within that physicality. E.g. I do not go on long walks these days, so no gun dog and few utilities would suit me. I do have places my dogs can blowout at home, and so my sighthounds suit me. They cope with a few hours on their feet on a busy yard day, and are independant enough to go and lay down when they are bored of helping me garden or do horses. On days I am less well, they cope with a pretty sedate day. I would say this equates quite well to a working day compared with days when one of you is there.

But ultimately the dog that wins your heart might be a mixed breed or something you have not yet considered.

Hahaha, noble with antlers. Love it.

They are a very ancient 'type' the herring gutted sight hounds (there are certainly depictions of sighthounds in ancient Egyptian art. So unusual to our eyes is right, but not to the world iyswim.

He thinks greyhounds are unattractive and yet wants a labrador! To me greyhounds are tons more attractive than labradors and usually have more personality

It looks like he's telling you it is either time for a walk or dinner, that's the way mine asks me, he sits in front of me like a dog statue or puts his head on the sofa.
