Getting rid of cooking smells

My niece has just returned to university for her final year in a shared property.

They moved in on yesterday, but have noticed a smell throughout the house. It seems to be african cooking/meat from the previous student occupants. I visited yesterday and its really overpowering.

They left the windows open most of the day, but once closed the smell returns and of course not practical to leave windows always open.

The landlord has agreed that the house can be redecorated and they are keen to start but are cautious in case the smells are ingrained into the walls.

Any advice on how to get rid of this smell from the rooms, walls, floors and ceilings?

why dont you try air odour neutraliser (not air fragrance but a neutraliser, dettol do a nice one) to see if the smell is from walls or just in the air!

The smell is probaly in the carpets more than the walls, id decorate then change the carpet and curtains and make sure the rooms have plenty of ventilation.......

Oh dear a student flat, whoops........Please ignore my post.....:o
  • I'd agree that it's most likely to be the carpet and curtains. Hire a carpet cleaner for a day. My current flat stank of nicotine when I moved in, using a carpet cleaner there was enough ash in the tank for about 20 ashtrays.
