I worked as a car salesman for 2 years so know how it works.

The advice I give friends and family is simple, go to the auction. Many people say that they are unhappy buying an auction car . Erm, where do you think the used car salesman got the car from???

So what if its knackered they reply? I bought a 34 month old mondeo
from Auction for £4,100. I took the wife round various dealerships so we could decide on type of car to buy . Backstreet dealers , same car was about 6k. Big dealers as found on the tele were up to 9k .
The car from the auction may have defects but in a worse case they will not cost anything like the money saved to put right ( anyhow warrantys from dealers are not that clever) . Take a mechanic and pay him £50 and its doubtfull you will buy a wrong en.

The safest bet at the auction are 2/3 year old ex company cars that are always sold at this age, full service history etc.
On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.

I have just ordered a car through a Ford dealer in Lancashire, not my local dealer. The price of the car I ordered was the best I had found, and I looked far and wide, and the customer service thus far has been spot on. I have already recommended the garage (and the salesman in particular) to a few people and the orders (from my recommendation) have begun to be taken. My father in law for one and at least one other from this thread and there are a couple more in the offing.

It is very true that an honest, reputable salesman is far better than the scheming schesiters that exist in many other dealerships. Anybody looking for a Ford can PM me if they would like the details of the garage. And no, I am not on the payroll, or a shareholder :D:D

I emailed every main dealer in a 250 miles radius, detailing exactly what I wanted and what I had to part exchange. I then emailed the best quote back around to everyone. Some dealers would not budge an inch from the list price, whilst others were very willing to haggle. Saved £3k from a few emails. Has to be worth the effort!

    Cheers Andy.

Ended up emailing about 9 or 10 within a 50 mile radius of me. Just have to sit tight and wait and see what they come back with.

When i was going to buy a new car all the salesman always spoke to my dad and never said a word to me! I was the one who was spending the money that sort of annoys me. I have now bought a new car i took my mum and my dad and got everything wanted I then got a email saying you can get your car cheaper this way so i had a look and found it £5000 cheaper!! I then rang another local dealer and they was doing it for £2000 cheaper so i rang the dealer i was getting it from and they reduced the price after a grumble it was either that or they would of had trouble selling a brand new car with all the extras i had on it. I did ask at the time of ordering if there was any discounts and was told there was no discounts on the car i was buying.

I went to the "locate a dealer" section of the manufacturers website, selected full list and systematically emailed all of them (bar those that were at the opposite end of the country).

This is the equivalent section on the BMW website:

Best of luck. Hope you get a great deal!
