Hull (East Yorkshire) Mattress Scam ALERT (?)

Bit worried about my Dad. He was approached by someone selling new premium mattresses out of a white van this morning (Monday). The driver claimed that he was trying to deliver them to a shop in Hull, but (a) he couldn't find the address and (b) the phone number given to him didn't work.
The mattresses normally retail for around £800 to £900. He offered to deliver one to my Dad's address for £170 (and take the old one away). The driver promised to deliver a new mattress tomorrow morning. We have phoned Trading Standards, and have agreed to take their advice and not buy a mattress, if the white-van-man turns up.
Has anyone in the Hull area been approached by someone selling mattresses out of a white van in recent days? Not sure what else we can do. My worry is that they might become aggressive. I have asked my Dad to discuss the matter with his neighbour - to secure local support. He lives on the south bank of the Humber, and I live in Hull
All advice and feedback appreciated...
Cheers!!!

If they're asking £170 for it, it's probably worth less than £30. Just tell him not to buy it.0

If he can get the make and model of the mattress from him then you can google it to see if it is a genuine bargain or not. If he's not a conman he won't mind waiting an extra day while you do a bit of research.0

Earlier thread here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2792252 - chances of a bargain look slim...0

The guy in the white van turned up this morning (a day late). My Dad sent him on his way, but not before the driver demanded £40 for diesel (for a 45 minute journey). My dad refused to pay and the buy left empty handed...0

We have the same guy turns up at our offices every year or so offering mattresses out of the back of his white van for not a lot of money. He's always got a story why they're so cheap (overstock, came from a closed down shop etc).
We always tell him to sling his hook. I'd bet it's the same guy. We're in Cottingham.0 -
