Car insurance renewal quote

Just had my annual renewal quote from swiftcover and, as expected for an existing customer, it's obscene! The usual "we've got you so we'll bleed you" scenario.
However, when obtaining quotes from a price comparison website cheapest was, you guessed it, swiftcover - a full £200 cheaper than they have quoted me to renew with all the same details!
My question is this: if I accept this quote from the comparison website and pay immediately in full on my credit card, then cancel my existing policy with swiftcover, is there any way they can wriggle out of this?

Don't cancel your policy, instruct them not to renew and allow the policy to lapse.
  • Ok, thanks for the tip.
If I do this will they then have to honour the quote made and accepted through the price comparison website?
Knowing the way insurance companies seem to operate I can't help thinking they'll say, in not so many words, "we have every intention of ripping you off and you have to either let us or else go away".

Have you phoned them to see if they will match the price, Or if there is any reason why they cannot offer that price?

It may say new customers only and not apply to any who has had a policy with them in the last 6 months.
No idea if they have terms like that just saying its best to ask.

You dont want to lapse the old one. Making sure you do cancel the renewal not just cancel any direct debit..
Then they say sorry that offer excludes you. Its £200 more now.
