You might find somewhere offering a few quid off but generally they don't get discounted.
Have you considered the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 16GB 3G also £499
I like Apple kit, I have a 27" iMac and a MacBook Pro laptop but when looking at tablets I went in the end for the Samsung as it seemed a little more flexible than the iPad in some areas. One of the things I wanted was to take hand written notes that can be converted and emailed along with drawings etc.
The Samsung comes with a pen, the iPad doesn't. So far I'm very, very impressed. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

You will rarely find any discounting on any Apple products but with the iPad representing something in the region of 65% of all tablets sold world wide (despite being the most expensive) your going to be even more hard pushed to get discounts.
Generally the best you can do is get cashback from the retailer or try and get something bundled in for free0 -
Refurbished ones are slightly cheaper: http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad/ipad3/wi_fi_cellular0

Possibly worth holding back buying one, until the new one has been announced and released, then you might find them being cheaper (might!)
Otherwise look around for what you can get off things, like free deliver, or two years warranty, Or go for a 2nd hand refurb from apple. If you spent a bit more on a refurb, you'd get a bigger ipad. Which although 16GB sounds a lot, you'll lose a small chunk of that outright 1-2GB (iiic from mums one) on the iOS, and thus also some apps can take a fair chunk, granted not GB though.
Are you sure you need the cellular version? There's a price difference of a hundred quid, which would easily get you a mifi unit PAYG from a couple of providers new, or 2nd hand for less on ebay. Then you can buy sims from likes of amazon or ebay of a better value than most contract, or payg micro sim signups.
Yes I know you could also buy those sims for the cellular version, but would need to be able to competently cut them down etc.
ALSO there is also a "student deals" mag kicking around tesco stores and inside it does have a voucher for £30 off a £300 spend on Electricals. But you need the voucher from the mag, and probably need to buy instore.0
