Thanks to notbritishgas. I have seen that mine does have 3 settings: On, timer and Off. All these while it has been on "On".
Have now set it on timer and taken the readings.
    Will update tomorrow.
    Many thanks

Be wary of supplier advice on tariff here at the moment.

The reason I say that is because they will look at your consumption but that's currently masked by the fact the timer wasn't set.

Suggest you take readings now and monitor so you can run your calculations again.

from my understanding, when the tiny buttons are pushed in, it shoule be off and when pushed out , it should be on. But all mine is pushed in and I still have hot water any time i need it.

when the buttons are 'in' it is 'on'

Thanks notbritishgas. I will push all of them out when I get home. Mine doesnt have the manual override. It has something like: On, Off, Timer; but am not sure how each operates. I will look more closely when I get home

    On = on constantly,

    Off = off completely,

Timed = will come on at the preset times, depending what pins you have pushed in.

Make sure that timer is at actual time and preset for an hour before you get up, or to catch the last hour of cheap rate, if your water tank is well insulated it should stay warm.

You can increase/decrease the time as required, if you need a 'boost' during the day, simply switch 'on' for half an hour or so, remembering to switch back to timed.

If you take your meter readings from both registers at the same time each day, you could post them here and get some good advice as to how to proceed. Turning your immersion heater timeswitch to 'timed' from 'On' will likely save you of the order of 3/4/5 quid a week typically, but could be more depending on your usage of water etc.

If your water is very hot, you could sabe by turning the temperature down - ours is set to 56C, and is fine at that temperature. Others prefer it hotter occasionally due to the current legionaires disease scare stories, but I personally don't think it applies in domestic immersion systems (then again, I don't have any expertise to say that).

Freezers can also use a surprising amount (not on a par with heating though). Longer term, I'd say a new efficient fridge freezer would be a good investment energy and cost wise (unless you really need a big freezer), especially if your freezer is old. You could turn your fridge and freezer temperature up a bit, if you think it's safe to do so. Our fridge is at 4C, and fine at that.

Post 14 was spot on. You need to get your consumption pattern correct first, then investigate an appropriate tariff, not vice versa.

    Ok. Will do that.
I have now changed the timer to "timed", and put 3 hours of heating at night by pulling the buttons out; although accoring to frugal they should be pulled "in" to be on. So that means I effectively have it "On" for 21 hours and "off" for just 3 hours? Well, we live and learn. WIll change it as soon as i get home in the evening.
I took a reading last night and this morning. Will post after i have taken for this night and tomorrow's as well.
I have checked where the freezer can be turned down, but i can't see anything. I really need to turn it down as all my food are too frozen.

Ok. I have been taking readings for some days now:
    Tuesday 21:40
    Day: 31792
    Night: 19606

    Wednesday 7am:
    Day: 31793
    Night: 19608

    Wednesday 10pm:
    Day: 31796
    Night: 19608

    Thursday 7:15am:
    Day: 31797
    Night: 19610

    Thursday 10:24pm:
    Day: 31801
    Night: 19610

    Friday: 7:10am
    Day: 31801
    Night: 19612

    Friday 11:15 pm
    Day: 31805
    Night: 19612

    Saturday: 7am:
    Day: 31806
    Night: 19614

This day, I turned the hot water in a off position all day; the freezer was off. For the first time while taking a shower at night around 11pm, i noticed the water was barely warm. After which I took the reading below:
    Saturday 11:11pm:
    Day: 31807
    Night: 19614

I then turned the immertion timer to "timer", and the taplets pushed out to come on between 2 and 6 am. I have found out that my switching time is 7:08 am. I also turned the freezer on and went to bed.
Woke up this morning to this:
    Sunday 7:24am:
    Day: 31810
Night: 19617 (I washed 1 load at night)

Now am supprised how I managed to use 3 units of day unit between 11:24pm and 12:08 when it did switch to night rate. Am guessing I have had the tapets wrong all the time. I have now pushed everything out now, and the 4 hours between 2-6 am "In" hoping it's the right "On" position.
If my water is not very hot when I shower tonight I will know I have got it right.
  • Hi,

well I use the same timer, and as stated in my previous post (15), when pins are in it is 'on'.

The picture in post 18 can be confusing, depending whether pin is black or grey.

I would say the large grey bit is the pin, so in the picture it is set to come on 7.30-10.30.

If you want to check the operation of the timer.

Have a look at your meter, see how it's flashing, then push in about 4 pins on the timer, spin the dial until the timer clicks at the 'in' pins, check meter again, is it going faster, if so it's 'on', or if your hot water tank is in an airing cupboard, you will hear it starting to 'sing', just like a boiling kettle.

If not, try again with pins in out position.

Remember to set timer to actual time and reset your on/off times.
