Neighbour's infuriating burglar alarm

About two years ago a young dot.com "millionaire" bought a ordinary 30s house near us and proceeded to enlarge it and rebuild it, inside and out the back. The front outside has been left fairly run down, presumably to detract from the internal luxury and consumer goods. Since it was finished, the owner has not been around much.

The rebuild included installing a state of the art burglar alarm presumably designed to deter intruders. It is set off by anything moving down the side of the house and round here that includes urban foxes. So several nights a week it goes off and then goes on "pulsing" loudly for around 30 minutes. It is not apparently connected to anything because no police or security firm turns up in response to it going off, it just annoys the hell out of all of the neighbours.

He is not there much so we have put a note in the door asking him to do something about it, with no response. Any suggestions on what to do next?

By law an alarm system can only sound for 20 mins, anything over that report it to your local council environmental health noise team.

Give them exact info of times / dates / how long its been going off for etc and they'll act on it.

Dont be tempted to do anything yourself though as that would be classed as trespass and could lead you into a whole heap of brown stuff.

Man in cross street to ours climbed up ladder and knocked alarm off wall. Went to court.. convicted of criminal damage and fined £200.

Environmental Health dept of local council and get on the emergency response officer's call out list.
  • totally irresponsible behaviour causing damage like that tut tut

i'd just open the electric box & pull out the main 100 amp fuse that would make him get it fixed when he came back to a freezer full of melted ice cream
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You need a volume control device. This:

is remarkably effective and a lot less violent that Hintzas suggestion but thats mainly born of the thought process that road signs are for taking pot shots at like they are in the Southern Hemisphere. :D

I remember in the mid 80s in London a very loud car alarm had been going for over an hour the traffic boys drove up popped the bonnet (still don't know how they did it so quickly) and just ripped the wires out of the alarm, slammed the bonnet and drove off. Was very funny to watch.

as already been said. contact your local council. they will write to owner and if no joy and still goes off for no reason they have legal power to get a company in to disconnect alarm and get owner to pay.
