Jsa & partner working?

I've just been reading a debt free wannabe diary, and was suprised by some of the advice, so thought i'd check here.

Basic question is can 1 partner claim JSA and recieve £71 or whatever it is nowadays, whilst the other is working and earning a decent income??

Im confused :o and intrigued. Im a Jobseeker but don't sign on, my other half earns a decent income, im just coming out of the SAHM position

    In a word No.

To qualify for (CB) JSA, you need to have been working and paid contributions in the qualifying period. I'm guessing you haven't been working as you were a SAHM?

If the unemployed partner has enough contributions then (usually last 2 tax years) then they can claim contributions based JSA. This does not take account of any partners income or savings, this last for 6 months.

If they do not have the relavant tax history then they can only clam income based JSA. This takes account of any savings (>6K it tapers to 16K where it stops) and partners income. Usually if the working partner earns more than £105 a week then the unemployed partner gets no JSA.

I never knew that, no good for me but thanks for clearing it up.

The person on the other thread is in quite a pickle and I didn't want them misinformed, but it was me that had it wrong :o
