No I'm just curious really. I live near Gatwick & it amazes me all the people that must pay loads to park near the airport.

If you were a very determined money saver it would be possible to park locally & get a bus/cab to the airport.
I agree. But it depends how many of you there are. For example, if you were coming from somewhere in London, then I think it's realistically possible to park at Fairfield Halls in Croydon, and get the Southern service from East Croydon station to Gatwick Airport. Long term 24-hour access patrolled and CCTV-monitored parking is available at Fairfield Halls, and the trains between East Croydon and Gatwick run 24 hours a day. Admittedly there's only one train an hour in the small hours of the night, but the service is very frequent during the day and the evening.

Perhaps it's worth it if there's only one or two of you, but probably not if you've got a big family in tow - the saving on airport parking wouldn't be worth the train fares if there were that many of you. Fairfield Halls car park is run by NCP http://www.ncp.co.uk/ - I'd advise you to contact them in advance, so that you can compare with car parks closer to the airport.

We've flown twice long haul from Gatwick. The first time we drove up and stayed the night before as we had to drive from South West Wales and given we then had an 9 hour flight and driving the other end we didin't want to be too tired. However the return drive home was a nightmare. We landed about 8am (our body clocks said about 3am! and it took us almost 5 hours to drive home as we had to keep stopping to swop drivers and get have a breather. Last Feb when we were flying from Gatwick again we looked into airport transport. We couldn't get a door to door service form our home for less than £150 for the 3 of us:eek: the train times were not very good and we didn't fancy having to change trains with 3 suitcases in tow (we had a 11am flight). A friend recommended to us National Express. Seemed like a good idea if a little pricey (£100 for 3 of us). On the outgoing journey to Gatwick the coach broke down after 2 hours. It took National Express 2 hours to get a replacement bus and we still had over 3 hours journey time to go to reach Gatwick and were in danger of missing our flight check in. We had played safe and allowed to arrive at the airport 4 hours before our flight. Others hadn't and called taxis for Heathrow flights.

We made it to the airport 30 mins before check in closed to be greeted with a huge queue for check in. Made it with mins to spare.

I still remember with horror sitting from 4am - 6am on a broken down bus with no heating. When the coach arrived at 6am we had to transfer over and this bus also had no heating or toilet. We then had to get off this bus at Heathrow and walk over to the bus station with our cases to catch a bus to Gatwick. Not easy when you've had no sleep, are freezing cold, desperate for the loo but more worried about not making your flight. A 5/12 hour journey turned into 8 hours. Never again.

having just flown long haul from heathrow and a nightmare 4 hour trip down
M1 to only just make it to the airport, would definitaley recommend overnight stay before for london airports. (should have taken us 2 and a half hours max).

for Gatwick I would recommend Jordans B & B (https://www.jordansbb.co.uk). stayed there last year. £60 for double room in lovely quaint old cottage with full cooked breakfast for 2 people, they charged approx £15 per week to keep our car on their driveway, and a taxi to airport (5 mins away) was £5 each way. was away 11 days. it cost £100, but was not only reassured that car not been driven to a Tesco carpark or a dodgy side road while we were gone (i've seen those documentaries!!), but had relaxing night before in the pub with some friends, adding a nice extra night onto our holidays, and had completely stress free 5 minute trip to airport.

    hope this helps..

The local taxi firm "Roadrunners" charge £8 minimum for "any" journey to/from the airport. I would be grateful if you can remember the name of the cab firm doing it for £5:D .

We parked at Manor Royal business estate. The 100, 10 amd 7 fastway busses run through it at 5-15 minute intervals most of the day. 10 miunte journey to Gatwick and £1.40 per person each way with parking at the side of the road being free!
Nothing makes more cross than paying more than you

  • I want to book at Gatwick using Clubcard deals, but the deal is not showing on their site (probably because it finishes on 30.04.07). Does anyone know the code to use to order Purple Parking vouchers ?
    Thanks
