p800 tax calculation

Hello Forum team

Ok so not sure how this works so here goes, looking for some advise when dealing with the tax man. I have just had a p800 tax calculation posted through my door, at first glance nothing seemed to be wrong until i looked to the bottom of the form where it stated i owe an additional £6500 (roughly), this would be on top of the normal £5-6 grand i pay a year taking me close to £12500 total for this year and stating that all moneys owed will be collected (not turned into a new tax code but actually collected!) so as you can imagine i now start to panic as there is no way i can afford this if i want to be able to pay my mortgage, bills, food, live..........

now the annoying thing here is that the section of the form that states i owe this money is called additional adjustments and that an explanation is given in the leaflet provided. Sure enough in the leaflet it shows points 11-14 are for additional adjustments, Now these notes/points are very very vague, and the only thing i can see that might relate to me is that this money could be owed for tax not paid in a previous year (this is very strange as i am paye and always have been, i'm 32 and have only ever worked for my present company going on for 15 years now).

So i checked with work and they said to check my p60 (unfortunately my company are not grasping the fact that this problem whilst rearing its head now did not actually occur this year) Anyway i was lucky enough that i did not bin my previous p60's, wage slips, tax notifications, p11d and although they look a little tatty are quite readable and i can see that on all forms the correct expenses have been accounted for (company car, medical, pension) but what i did find was on the p60 for the tax year 2008-2009 it states that i earned over 45k (which is nearly 20k more than i was earning at the time-although i wish i had earned this).

the reason i think this is where the fault lies is that on that p60 from 08-09 it shows that tax was only taken for a lesser amount not 45k, so i think the tax system has looked at my account and can see that i (supposedly) earned this 45k and so i should be taxed on that which is where i think this 'addittional adjustments for this tax year has come from, so in my mind if this is corrected i will not owe this money and could possibly be owed money myself for over taxing me between 08-09 to present (me hopes).

other than that i am unsure, i have been receiving two three different tax codes a year for several years now, each one replacing the last in sequence (i think because of the above).

besides being a silly billy for not double checking my p60's more carefully the advise i am seeking is how do i go about sorting this mess?
Any tips on dealing with the tax man? as i have a feeling that i will be stone walled, i have all wage slips, p60's, tax notifications, p11d to provide evidence if needed for them
Has anyone there been in this same situation and had any luck?

as i say i would like to think that this is an easy fix and maybe even beneficial to me, but as long as i don't owe any money that would be ok by me. so i think i have a good case for being able to sort this mess but i am a little wary of ending up worse off somehow.
