What can you make with Tins?

Hi, I have been wondering if there is any thing you could make with " old tins"
rather than recycling them. I have made a pen/pencil holder with an old Baked bean tin. Very Blue Peterish. But just wondered if there was anything else that tins could be used for. Any thoughts anyone?

When I used to be a Guide, we punched holes around the top (ie the end which had been opened) of an empty tin, stood it over a nightlight and cooked mini pancakes on top. How cool is that?!!!
Possibly not the MOST helpful / useful idea, but still...!
Also used big cans for stilts (with loooong loops of string to hold on to)...
Have fun!0 -
i suppose you could thread some of them on string and make bird scarers, when my nieces were up we made the old telephone thing with two tins and some string, they thought it was real magic lol, again if you've got kiddies you could make rice shakers just half fill with dried rice and put some brown tape over the top, if i think of anything else i'll post them later.

thought of another one lol, pierce some holes in a tin and use it as a tea light holder

Actually that is a cool idea, good for when your camping or just messing about in the garden on a summers evening. How long did it take for the pancakes to be cooked? Thanks for that idea. demented20p savers club

if you have only electric cooking facilities and in an area prone to winter power cuts as I am, check out http://frugalliving.about.com/cs/emergencyplanning/a/blcstove.htm
I tried this - used it twice this winter and amazing how quickly it boils water (for a cuppa or hot water bottle), or heats soup.
I had bought a catering size tin of tomatoes from Morrisons, £1.49 and used that tin. I tried the punching holes in the tin bit and found it quite difficult but in the end I found a small cooling rack, stood that on top of the tin and it works now for any size saucepan.
Smaller tins are great as tea light holders as previously posted.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

To be honest, I can't exactly remember... I know one time it worked really well, but another time it didn't! You have to put a bit of oil on the top of the can and make sure enough air gets to the candle (actually,it may have been a normal candle, not a tea light come to think about it!) You might need to stand the tinan on something to let more air in..also, don't put too much pancake mix on- if it's too thick... it doesn't work!!
Sorry not to be more helpful- but good luck to anyone who tries this!!0 -
they are very useful for keeping nails etc. in in the garage or toolshed.0

You could make a mobile phone.............
Get two empty tins make a hole in the middle of the bottom of each one.
Then get a long piece of string put it thro the hole of each tin and tie abig knot.
Then with two people one with each tin walk away from each other until the string becomes tight....one person speaks into their tin the other person holds their tin to their ear and you can hear each other........
No contract necessary but reception not good over long distances0 -
i was given an amazing present, a model of a racing bicycle made in Africa, with bits of tin ,wire, rubber, stands about 6 inches high by 10 inches long.It is quite intricate with all the spokes ,water bottle brakes, etc.
i suppose its just how creative you are:D
We have been collecting 30 litre tins from the local school (have about 10) but we haven't used them yet:cool:living on the "edge"0 -
I have saved most of my not so bashed or no dent cans and have stripped the paper labelling off them...My plan is to pint them with different colors, put som holes on the sides in different areas and attach a wire as hadles and use it as a tealight holder for the garden...I will also decorate the outsides of the can so it a bit colourful...:pSealed Pot Challenge 2012 #1502:)
