Thanks again to everyone for their comments. I couldn't really run to an Panasonic at the moment, but have bought the Fastbake direct from MR for £29.55! Seems like a bit of a bargain, especially with free P+P.
It arrived today, and my first loaf is baking, so hopefully it will come out of the pan ok. If it doesn't, I'll try the helpline, but if that still doesn't work, it will have to go back.
Fingers crossed - and am trying to distract myself on here, so I don't keep going to check on my breadmaker every 2 minutes. It's very exciting!

:j Well, it worked! I've only done one loaf so far on the quick bake setting (wanted it to eat with our supper) and I used a breadmix for Sundried tomato and cheese that was sitting in the cupboard. As I posted before, my big problem with my old machine was that the bread absolutely refused to leave the tin. Not the case with this one. A few taps on its bottom, and the tin willingly allowed the loaf to depart. Excellent!
The mixing paddle did what it was supposed to and folded down so there was only a small hole in the loaf. Very clever.
I'm going to make a big loaf overnight using one of the recipes in the book. Will report back again tomorrow, but thanks to everyone on here who's recommended this machine as being a good (budget) alternative to the Panasonics. It's looking good so far!:T

Have now done my first ordinary white loaf overnight, and sprang out of bed this morning (honestly!) to see how it was. It looked good, no saggy bits in the middle, and smelt wonderful. Took it out of the machine, left it to cool while I went for a shower, came back and got it out of the tin. Again, no problem at all. It was eaten by my childern at breakfast time, my younger ds and I with soup for lunch, and my elder ds as toast after school. They all seem to like it and there isn't much left. Have just put it on for a third time to make a sandwich loaf so that I've got home made bread for doing the lunch boxes this evening.
So far, so good and really pleased with my purchase. A real bargain at less then £30!

After reading this thread I decided to bite the bullet and order the VFM MR FB. I ordered it late Tuesday night, and it has just arrived. So already VFM with such a prompt delivery - for free!

Will negotiate home on the bus tonight (at work at mo) and have a go with the kiddies tonight - can't wait :)

I cant stand the taste of the bread made in the breadmaker,I only use it for making dough or cakes.

The bread always has a funny taste to it when it`s been cooked in the maker. So I make my dough in it and then either make bread buns or put the dough in loaf tins and pop them in the oven.

I do love the smell of fresh bread but not first thing on a morning,it just knocks me sick.

  • You might try Cake Release from Lakeland. It's designed to stop cakes from sticking to fancy shaped tins so it should work in your machine tin - just brush on as you would vegetable oil.
