Can anyone help me create a new boot record?
I recently updated some bits in my PC (new RAM & added an SSD as my system drive), and decided to go along with upgrading to Windows 7 (as my processor is 64bit, but 7 wasn't out last time I re-installed).
Foolishly, though, I installed the new OS onto the SSD, without disconnecting the drive containing my existing XP install first - I then proceeded to format the XP drive.
What I am assuming has happened is that the boot record was left on the XP drive, and is therefore now gone as I can only boot into Windows with the installation disk in the drive; otherwise I get an 'invalid system disk' message.
Also possibly part of the situation, in the 'disk management', the SSD is listed as 'Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition'; the old XP one 'Page File, Primary Partition' (yes, I have page files on two separate disks), and my third drive says 'System, Active, Primary Partition'. Not being 100% certain, it seems to me that my PC is confused over which drive is supposed to be what?

Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Give this a go and see if it helps...

nope, afraid that failed; however it did give me a clue as to the problem and I've fixed it.
I had the SSD plugged into my RAID controller's SATA, and it looks like it won't find that to boot from (the BIOS finds it no problem, its perfectly visible, just won't locate it automatically to boot). Swapped the cables over and it boots just fine.
However its now confused me further, as the recovery disk I made can't find any active windows installations to repair any more, even though it now boots & works correctly?!Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0
