Cost of double glazing sash windows! Please help!

Hello guys please,

Im panicking FTB and currently in the process of purchasing 1 bd flat in a typical Victorian house. Im young lady so have never dealt with any house work, especially windows replacement! I need help!

The 1 bd flat has (rough guidance) 6 single glazed sash windows roughly 175*125 size each, one of the windows is broken (the upper part is loose and keeps falling, so probably need to replace the frame) I need to double glaze them, so i guess i need to take them out and replace wih the new ones or what do i need to do and how much it cost? I need to know the rough cost asap as it may help me to renogotiate the price i offered!

Please help:eek:

Hi Melabella, how many panes of glass in each sliding sash?, there are 2 sashes per Boxframe sash window.

Is the building Grade I or II Listed?

If the existing windows are in good condition you could have them overhauled ,draught proofed and possibly fitted with slim double glazed units. This can be done by a competant carpenter.Do not pay a "Specialist sash renovating " company as they charge a premium for what is fairly basic work.

If they need completely replacing then to replace a single complete Hardwood boxframe, double glazed, draught proofed etc will cost somewhere in the region of £1500-£1800 each.If you have all six replaced at the same time it would be cheaper, volume work is cheaper to make so you should be able to save £150-00 per boxframe on the above estimates..
