I still think you may struggle. The job maybe expensively priced, but they haven't done any thing illegal, haven't acted fraudulently. They didn't provide a specification or estimate, so you have nothing to compare their charges against.

And if you slander them, then on your head be it.

And do you really think the papers will be interested in a minor squabble between a customer and a builder?

Op do you have a local paper - just in case you need one?

First thing I'd do is go to Trading Standards. They might already have had complaints about this company.
They don't sound like the type of people who'd do this as a one-off.
If you get no joy from them, get in touch with BBC's Watchdog programme.

I totally agree with Barneysmom, which ever way you look at it it's a b1oody discrace, these people need drumming out of the building industry.
