would you do it, or wait for warmer climates in December?

Not sure on area of Australia, but would be our first visit and so we would be travelling around.

  • Depends on what kind of weather you like and what you plan to do.

I went to Perth twice in August, the years I went, it was warmer in Australia than it was in England....

Normally we'd pick a beach holiday, but with it being so far then we would be travelling and site seeing, not so much laying on a beach (although that would be nice too!).

OH kitesurfs and the Gold Coast seems to be fab in August for that - temperature doesn't bother him (he does it here in winter).

If you go in August, its the perfect time to go up north - winter (but for the north around 23c) and the dry season - so queensland; cairns, port douglas, the daintree, kuranda, great barrier reef and brisbane, surfers paradise.

But the Australians will also have the same idea - they head up there to escape the cold in the south, so it will be pricer and busier than in the summer - but in the summer the north has its wet/hot season, and believe me it rains! We were there in the summer and it was torrential. We were travelling so had a lot of time to spare but for a holiday Id say you really need to pick the best time of year.

You could still visit Sydney, Melbourne etc, just pack your winter clothes as well as your swimsuit for queensland!

I went to Australia in August and it was great!
I only put on a coat in the evening, and walked around in a t-shirt all the time. Sydney and Cairns, amazing weather for sight-seeing, and still went to the pool in Cairns (at the hotel and the one they have in the middle of town).
In Uluru it was actually too hot during the day (how do people manage in their summer?), and the only time I was cold was there waiting for the sunset.

If I went back, I'd go again during the Australian winter...

  • I was there July/August time. We travelled to Sydney and stayed there for a few days. Had to laugh - so many people walking round in their big winter coats and hats, and there was us in the wee skirts, flip flops and strappy tops!! :rotfl:

Most of the time we were in Cairns further up the coast which was gorgeous weather. Likewise for our way travelling to Sydney too, including our stops.
