Hi,not a scrap of fruit or veg will get wasted if you invest in a juicer,my son sent me one via amazon for last mother's day and I'm converted:) Spinach in particular is ideal for juicing along with anything else I care to add, only have one glass a day, normal meals otherwise(I'm all bright-eyed and bushytailed now and extra weight has melted away too bonus!)

I have one but it is cheaper for me to buy a carton of juice than buy the fruit/vegetables to juice to get the same amount, I bought it to help Mum as I thought I would have for a long time to come even though she was seriously ill and that was was the impression given sadly she passed away at the end of April.

Looks like UK farmers are worried the problems of a ruined harvest wheat wise may affect next years yield too, It's already approx 15% down, they are suggeting once again food prices will be affected. Ireland has come up with some idea to offset the problem, Scotland farmers want their Parliament to adopt a similar idea but our Government has a different idea.

On many things it usually does go down a different route to Wales and Scotland. We have to look no further than the prescription charges and care of the elderly.

  • Gosh this thread has scared the bejesus out of me :(

However, I think some of you more experienced MSE OS'rs will be proud. This week I have been on lates (dont usually do them) so have popped into Tesco on the way home. I have now got a freezer full of veggies and fruits (swedes, carrots, white and red cabbages, herbs, blackberries, raspberries, rhubarb, mushrooms and a few other bits) Also got a couple of quiches, sausage rolls, plus 6 loaves of bread, and sandwiches for the OH and I for work. Nothing cost me more than 15p :j:j:j:j

I shalt not complain about lates ever again :)

I have been increasingly horrified at the escalating cost of food, and still desperately trying to get DH to have his LBM so the shopping is not as efficient as it should be. I have manged to get an A rated freezer (big 5foot high job) free, so now I am planing to get this up and running and get to the markets to get veg etc to fill it up. We usually do a big freezer meat shop from the butchers at Christmas but I think we will be doing that sooner rather than later. I remember all too well the pains of the food being too expensive making stuff go further, will have to have a chat with Mum about it and get some wisdom from there. I have (fond but cold) memories of my childhood raising lambs, pigs and so on in the garden I just wish we had the space to do this again. Different tactics are needed I am afraid.
I am going to make a big effort to get the to supermercados later at night and see if I can get more reduce stuff to prep and freeze. First thing is to turn on the freezer and get it down to temperature, a nice bright day is needed for that so we use as much solar power to do this as possible!

Here's to our planning and let's hope we can minimize the money-grabbing impact on our food budgets!

It's not just herbs, a lot of so called value items are no longer cheap and in some cases cost more than the standard range. Toilet roll and tin foil are over double the cost they used to be in Tesco, and their value butter is the same price as normal, bizarre

I think it is because they make very little (even a loss) on these, which was marked off against the profit on the more expensive ranges. If more people purchase 'value' the loss is bigger, so as a result they put the price of these items up, so to minimise this loss!

I just buy the fruit that is near to a £1 bag. (though some bags are getting smaller!)

Most weeks Morrisons have Apples, Pears or both @ £1. bag (don't know for how much longer though)

Bread is getting up to £1.50 loaf now though there are £1 or so loaves on offer

I have to add, it is harder when you don't have all the big supermarkets, or access to them. Where we live it is Lidl, Coop (4 of them in total!), Tesco or local shops......everything else is a trip off the island. Our petrol and diesel also cost more, so that impinges on any 'stocking up' trips away too :(. Also having to ferry/transport things here puts prices up.
