Changing Bank Accounts

I have a Natwest student account. Having read through the stuff on here though I think The HBOS account looks better with its £2750 overdraft, and I can see myself needing it over the next 4/1/2 years. So do I have to close my Natwest account before I can open a HBOS one and get the overdraft. Can I open a HBOS one with no overdraft, transfer all my money from my natwest one, close my natwest one and then apply for a HBOS overdraft... I know I wouldn't get it all straight away but I don't need it all, so long as it can build up over the next couple of years thats cool.
Basically my question is, can I have both accounts open and then close my natwest one before applying for the HBOS overdraft. Or do I need to have no account when I open my HBOS one to ever qualify for their student overdraft?
