Any change in behaviour should be checked our by a vet in the first instance.

In this particualr instance, I don't think it is necessary.

I dont know about other dog owners - but, with my staffy I very quickly learned which was her 'play' growl and when she actually meant business! she would sound quite demented when we play 'fought' and I am sure other people would think she was attacking me! I only ever heard her 'business' growl when people/strangers got too close to me or the kids, or another dog attacked her. she really had the sweetest nature but did enjoy a good 'play fight'!

my Springer didnt growl while playing, instead she sort of 'grunted' and 'huffed'. I think I can count on the fingers of one hand when she actually growled! and each time she had darn good reason!
  • thanks guys for all your comments & suggestions.

As I said the growling occurances are very few and far between but saturday's performance was something else.

I've ordered the book that you recommended krlyr .....do they do one for husbands as well???

I think any big, thick book swung with enough force would do the job :rotfl:

Our beagle is similar - in the evenings! He's as good as gold during the day, does the 'stealing' thing with anything he can grab - tea towels, anything from the bin etc - and will give it up quite quickly now, very occasionally with a small token growl - he used to be very snarly when asked to give anything up.

But in the evening, if he's on the sofa and you touch him - you get the full works, growling, lips trembling - we ignore him and carry on and he stops. We put it down to him being tired in the evening - he's a rescue and had a horrible start in life, already neutered when we got him. He is improving though!
