I sold a car a few weeks ago.I got the new owner to fill the log book & sign, but he must have filled the new owner bit i gave to him.He has signed it, but i am unable to read the name.
I know i should have checked...I have no contact details for him at all.I have received a letter from the DVLA saying someone has tried to register the car,it must be the new owner.

Will i get a fine?

    you is lucky
attention to detail next time write a receipt out with all details and time of purchase and keep a copy
remember new owner might be registering car later than when you sold it because it went through a speed camera/ fuel drive off/ bank blagging /last wednesday (insert ones of your choice)

It was probably when he tried to tax the car.
    I know i was a plonker...should i contact the DVLA?
  • Send off what you have, with a covering letter explaining as per your post. DVLA will take you off as keeper and send you letter to confirm. Staple your letter to V5C, so it doesn't get separated.

DVLA will leave the registered keeper blank, and the new keeper will have to contact them directly to get a V5C/logbook.

you say youve had the standard letter from dvla
if you ignore it they automatically send out the logbook to new keeper
if you dispute it they send another letter to you asking if you have vehicle if you say no then they automatically send out log book

    joke isnt it

    Keep a copy. LOL

What's the point in writing one not to keep it?

    He can't send it on.

you dont need a cover letter
depending on if you want to be helpfull just send confirmation that the vehicle was sold and what date
if not dont reply if the dvla dont get a return letter within a month they assume the new claim is the correct owner of the vehicle

they will get a new v5 sent to them upon reciept of confirmation of vehicle sold or after the 30 days of non return

New owner has obviously requested the vehicle to be transferred to their name as registered keeper, and because the DVLA hasn't received your section of the form to say you've sold it, they're writing to make sure it isn't someone attempting to fraudulently claim to be the keeper of your vehicle. As others have said, you can either write back and tell them it's OK, or you can just ignore it in which case they'll go ahead having not received an objection from you.

If you're worried about getting a fine, it might be easier to write to them and say it's OK to transfer, and imply that you sent your section off some time ago and it must be lost in the post. I don't believe it's an issue though. If you do write to them, keep a copy - last time I had something like this they ignored my letter so it was useful to be able to send it again.

I wouldn't write to them at all. You are simply askign the great admin machine that is the DVLa to turn its attention to you.

If you ignore the letter they will simply issue the new owner a log book.

You might get asked why you didn't post it off like you should have done (all the instructions are on there for you) but if that happens you did post it didn't you...? It probably just got lost in the post didn't it...? etc etc.
