The first one is a CABLE ROUTER (for use with Virgin cable etc)
The second one is a MODEM ROUTER, which is what you need if you have your internet via broadband on a normal telephone line.
If you look at the picture of the back of the first one, you will see there are only ethernet ports and no telephone line port.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
The seconds one is for BT lines first one for virgin lines0

For an amateur you're good at this
Connectivity WAN Port : 1x RJ11
The modem has this which is a telephone jack basically. WAN is wide area network, it connects to your ISP
The other one lacks this and as you spotted is not a modem just a local router for your home computers to talk to
Im not sure it would work with Virgin, not without extra hardware. Virgin cable comes out of the wall as ethernet ?Connectivity 4 LAN 10/100/1000 Mbps ports0 -

It's unlikely to be a router problem!!
