Lucy just ate poo!!!!!!!!!

Just took my dogs for a walk, Lucy was off lead in the park when she spotted a freshly produced pile of sloppy dog poo and scoffed it with great relish!!!!!:eek:

Urgh! I put her straight on the lead and said "NO!" pointing at where it had been, but she just licked her lips as if she'd had best fillet steak!

Soooo...can I confidently expect doggy trots later today?:(

  • Welcome to the world of animals! I have had (and still got), many dogs who relish cat poo if at all runny. I had a huge GSD who ate his own poo (vet checked- just an unfortunate habit- he was emaciated when I got him)

Their own poo always came out normal though.

Our next door neighbours lab used to come into our garden and eat all our cats poo ! Brilliant, saved me having to go and move it all when gardening !

My two do it occasionally-only certain ones though. Must be a dog who gets fed fillet steak or something..lol.

I had to get the cats to 'go' outside though as the dogs saw the litter tray as their buffet!

Chances are it's dogs who've not had anything near as good quality as fillet steak, but cheaper dog foods full of poorly digested ingredients that often come out not too far off the state they went in as. It's natural for animals to practice coprophagia to further digest it and get all the nutrients out of a meal and if the poo smells very strongly of undigested food, its even more appealing.

Sometimes it can be a symptom of the dog lacking something in their diet so can be worth looking into, sometimes it's just a bad habit that's hard to break - using a longline, a muzzle (especially if the dog does get an upset tum from it) and working on a really strong 'leave it' can help.

Both my dogs are excellent at the LEAVE IT! command...I just didn't see the pile of poo in time:(

Is Lucy likely to be sick or get the trots do you think?
  • Doubt it, none of mine ever have. It would need to be that the poo actually had something like salmonella in the first place- not at all likely.

Unlikely, obviously there's a risk of bacteria, viral or parasitic transfer if the dog who's faeces it belongs to was carrying anything but the chances aren't that high I imagine. I'd just say consider administring a wormer sometime soon (but not as a complete, do-it-before-nightfall type emergency, just order some online - Cestem is a cheap version of Drontal, no prescription required, available cheaply from Animed Direct with no postage charge) if you don't use one regularly, keep an eye out for anything like mucus on his own poos (can indicate a bacterial infection) but not worry about it too much, mine have eaten various species' poo with no problem!

Arran used to eat his own when he was a pup, I just thought he was mimicking his mum who would have cleaned up after her pups. A friends dog was always eating other dogs poo, I got her to change to a decent dog food and the dog stopped it. My first sheltie Ailsa had her very own vending machines, she would gently nudge our rabbits and out would pop a sweetie :p, Ellie on the other hand loves bird poo, not the soft stuff but it has to be dry and crunchy :rotfl:, dogs are minging creatures.

Thanks krlyr...I feel a bit reassured now, but still grossed out! Lucy seems fine but I hope she never does THAT again!

Put me right off my dinner! It's bad enough when they roll in it, but eating it is just horrible. She's a dog who loves to lick you...but she's definitely not licking me for a while, that's for sure!
