Lodgers and Debt?

Options
Hi all
Can anyone advise me if I think that my lodger may be in debt if I have to organise a dissassocation thingy with them on a credit agency?

I havent had any debt for at least 3-4 years but was recently turned down for a phone with no reasons given other than 'check its no-one else at your property' Also the other day a postcard came through the door asking 'the occupier' to contact a name and a number which turned out when I googled it to be a debt agency. I have lived in the same property for 15 years and this has only started happening in the last year. Any advice please. I would appreciate it. Thanks:)

Credit history is for people, not properties.

There is no reason why you should be associated unless you have joint accounts with your lodger.

You can double check this on your credit record by signing up with one or all three agencies either for free trial or of statutory £2 credit report.
  • No one else will affect you anselld says

Why when you get turned down for things like phones do they say "check its no one else at the property", what a load of tosh!

But worth checking your credit files, if you do the free trial remember to cancel or do the ones through the post for £2. Worth checking both experian and equifax just to be on safe side
    For everthing else there's mastercard.
    For clampers there's Barclaycard.
  • Much appreciated both :T

I second getting a £2 report from one of the three credit agencies. This will tell you if there's a problem in your history or if you're being linked to your lodger.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!

Mobile phone companies are notorious for putting incorrect information on people's credit files.

I wouldn't be surprised if the OP was linked on their credit file to the lodger by a mobile company.

Even though my address is clearly different to others I found that one mobile phone company:
    1. Did a credit check on me and put me in another flat.
    2. Did another credit check on me and put me at another house on the same road.

I only found this out because I had another complaint with the mobile phone company.

If the lodger was dishonest as well they could have linked themselves to you. I know two examples of this. In both cases the person did this deliberately to ensure they could get credit as they hadn't lived in their UK addresses long enough.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

For the sake of £2 each (tere are ways to get them free, or even get paid to check - search the moneysaving website) I would check all 3 agencies.

Just because one has no adverse entries does not mean the other two might not.
  • Thanks for all your replies guys, that's really helpful:A
