been an idiot with new cpu/mobo

have asrock z68 extreme4 gen3 motherboard (bought 2 months ago and fitted) and i5-3570k cpu. the problem is the cpu will only work with a bios update. can't update the bios without a cpu

can anyone advise the best option. i was looking a getting the asus p8z77-v mobo but don't know if it would be better to get another cheaper temp cpu to update bios and keep existing mobo.

  • Buy an OEM 2500K, update BIOS then return CPU under DSR.

  • I have the ASUS P8Z77-V LX and the 3570k and they compliment each other very well.

  • thanks for the replies. what is the cheapest cpu i could put in to update bios. i take it if i was to returning it i wouldn't put thermal paste on cpu. wouldn't feel too guilty about returning it to amazon as have spent a lot there recently and never returned anything

  • OP is entitled to try out goods under DSR.
Under the DSRs, customers are under a statutory duty throughout the period of cancellation to retain possession of the goods and take reasonable care of them.

DSRs do not link cancellation rights with your ability to resell items as new. Unless the item falls under the cancellation exemption , customers can cancel a contract and return the goods to you even if they have opened and tested the goods and, as a result, you are unable to resell them.

If that requires opening the packaging and trying out the goods, then they have not breached their duty to take reasonable care of the goods.

In these circumstances, you cannot insist that customers return the goods as new or in their original packaging. You may ask customers to take care when they open the package or return goods with the original packaging, but you cannot insist on this.

The DSRs do not provide for goods to be returned in a fit state for resale.

There's not much difference between the processors performance.Going forthe 2500K would be the easiest option. The sandybridge chip uses a little more power, but you won't really notice any speed difference. Articles I've read indicate the Sandybridge chip is a little easier to overclock at higher speeds (assuming that is the reason you are buying the K version).

The 3570 can make use of some features in the 7 series chipsets, but as you're dropping it into a Z68 board that becomes irrelevant.

I have that mobo with a 2500k. Its UEFI bios makes overclocking a doddle and (subject to silicon lottery) you can hit 4.6 GHz on air with the 2500k.
