Hoover washing machine drum not turning

Today during a wash cycle my machine started to make a noise so went to investigate. The noise was similar to a handful of fine shingle in the drum and as I watched there was a blueish glow from under the machine  machine emptied and filled ok, just the drum wasn't turning. Needless to say I turned it off at the mains and finished by hand. Is this problem worth getting a repairman out for (machine over 5yrs old) or should I just go straight out and buy a new one? Would be grateful for advice/experiences.

Sounds like the brushes are worn out. If you are able to take the back off the machine they are usually easy to replace.

Have a look at www.washerhelp.co.uk. There is a really good washing machine repairs section on that site.

  • No joy on freecycle either! I will contact our local independent electrical stockist tomorrow as they also do repairs (I think if repair not sensible then they waive call-out/repair fee if you buy off them) The Washerhelp site was very good and informative and had reviews of machines which will help in choosing.
  • Hi,

well I wouldn't just go out and buy a new one, I would investigate first as to the cheapeat option.

    I would agree with

My machine went a bit wonky, turned out it was the brushes on the motor, got a set of new brushes, fitted them myself, only cost £4.50.
  • Thanks for advice, went to the local shop who said they would look at it (free) as they thought it was the brushes too (and my DH could do that) just concerned about the blue sparks underneath the machine, so he said he would check it wasn't shorting. Only they couldn't fit it in today so will have to wait til Tues. ......!

Update, shop owner rang at 18:30 and said he could come and look, definately needs new brushes but unfortunately didn't have the right kind. He will check out the machine not arcing when he has replaced them.
