Connecting laptop to Hi-Fi system

Hello,

I bought a Macbook Pro that I want to connect to my Hi Fi system for listening to music. I guess in order to connect to the Hi-Fi system, I'll have to use AV cable. However, should I connect to the macbook pro using the audio in/out (similar to headphone jack) or the HDMI ports in the mac? Which one would produce higher sound quality? I haven't bought cables yet but not sure which one I should go for (if both types exist).

Thanks for reading :)

P.s. sorry if I used any wrong term in my post (English isn't my first language and I'm not that tech savvy)

what audio inputs do you have on the hi-fi? you won't be able to use HDMI unless your hi-fi has HDMI in.

you can use a 3.5mm to 3.5mm headphone cable from the macbooks headphone out to the AUX in of the hi-fi.

A slightly better option, if your hi-fi has an optical input you can use an optical cable for the audio, this is also from the headphone out of the macbook pro

Get a Behringer UCA202 and plug into USB port. Line out from that to line in on amp.

    Under £20 on eBay

    Thanks for your reply :)

I'm not sure what the correct term for the port in the Hi-Fi system would be so I'm posting the link of the cable that fits into the port of the Hi-Fi.

The red and yellow jacks (if those are for audio) fits into the port of the Hi-Fi system (you can probably guess it's not a new Hi-Fi).

    Thanks :)
  • Those cables will be fine. To be very honest you are not going to notice much difference between using those cables and HDMI (if they could be plugged in).

If you had a dedicated soundcard, something like may benefit from HDMI. However onboard sound chips would not give you the quality boost you seek from a change in cables.

The ports on your HiFi are phono sockets, colour-coded Red for audio Right, White for Left.

You'll get better results with the UCA202 and a twin phono lead than working from the conventional audio out on the mac...
