SORN question

I took my car from the UK to Greece last year. As the car was here for over 6 months, I was obliged to reregister the car in Greece and tax and insure it there. At the same time, I made a SORN declaration. I have now received a reminder that my UK road tax is due or I have to make another SORN declaration. The paperwork says that I cannot make a SORN if the car has been permanently exported.

I will be bringing the car back to the UK eventually but my question is what exactly do the words 'permanently exported' mean?

If I intend to bring it back, presumably it hasn't been permanently exported but is it possible to have the same car registered in two different countries?

And if I had to declare it permanently exported, what happens when I bring it back? Does it just get the old plates put back on?

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK, by registering it in Greece either you or the Greek authorities should have told DVLA that it was exported.

When you bring it back, it gets the same UK registration back - you show the greek paperwork to DVLA who issue you a new V5.

Ask DVLA what to do now, because it has been exported.

It used to be possible to fill in a section on the V5 and send it to DVLA to inform them that you had permanently exported the vehicle, but I am not sure if this is still possible. if it is just send the V5 to DVLA with the relevant section filled out.

If you do return to the UK then DVLA should be able to give you back the original registration number. This happened to friends of ours who moved to Ireland and took their car with them and registered it over there. They have now brought the car back and DVLA have re-registered the vehicle and given it the original reg number.

  • in your case permanently exported would mean anything longer than a short trip outside the UK. You will have to import the vehice back into the UK mind. There should be a paper trail of it being registered in Greece so if the DVLA have not recognised the initial SORN you can show them the Greek paperwork to give you credit/refund for the time not recognised as SORN
