is it just me but if there were not many being interviewed couldn't the boss have sat in on the interviews too if his agreement is needed!

I hope this job is a well paid one for 2 interviews.

What happens in a 4th interview I wonder..................

For a company with 300 employees it's usually 2-3 interviews. I don't think any companies do more than 3 interviews. It's usually a CV screening, phone interview, group interview, 1 to 1 interview/1 to a panel interview, and maybe one more 1 to 1 interview.

Or maybe he just likes to see the person they actually want for the job after it's all done and dusted and the "there is one other candidate" is just a ruse to keep me on my toes.
    I can only hope. :D

My last 3 jobs were with fairly big co's (500 people at the last one) and I only ever had one interview for them.

When I used to work as a genius at Apple, they put me through 4 interviews before finally signing off on it.

In any case, all the very best OP :)
