CHASINGBUTTERFLIES, thanks for your very detailed post on how you got rid of yours, some great tips there :)

    Likewise LAUREL7172 - great advice again :)

You've all given fab advice and I agree, although Ivy can look pretty it is just so destructive, and seems so hard to get rid of!!!!:(

I live in a row of solid Yorkshire stone cottages. The former next door neighbour had let the stuff grow rampant. We had all on just to get him to cut back the bits encroaching on neighbouring properties . Anyhow when the new owner moved in, we scared him into taking action with tales of vermin scaling his walls! :D In fact we helped him get rid - a slow arduous job riving it away from the walls. Fortunately it came away without too much damage - just a bit of scarring. He also had a real job cutting out the stump - I think he could have just used stump killer.
Why do people grow this stuff? :(

One warning to use safety goggles to protect your eyes. Ivy can get very dusty, not to mention mortar dust if / when you pull it away or it comes down.
  • We chopped about 6 foot out from the floor up the walls (as far as I could reach without a ladder) and then let it die off. A year later with some gentle encouragement it pretty much just fell off itself. Getting the stump out was hard work though! Picks at the ready!

Getting the live stuff off the wall is absolutely horrible work, billions of spiders, masses of horrible tendrils and sooooooo much dust. I'd happily kill it off and sort it when it's dead. Or pay someone else to do it.

If anyone has any ideas on how to get rid of all the stuff left clinging to the walls would be much appreciated, despite being very dead and brown the tiny little clingers are still holding on strong and I do not want to damage the brickwork by blasting it with something heavy duty.
    Thinking critically since 1996....

It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.
