Couldn't edit the thread subject, so please find my new subject header in between the bold quotes below:

"So i had my flywheel, clutch and slave replaced on my car a few weeks back which cost in excess of £600. The reason for replacing was down to a noise when the clutch is pressed down.

After paying and getting in the car i had two boxes containing the release bearing and flywheel (old parts i assumed to prove they had done the work), obviously they had done something as the clutch was biting lower (i would expect down to the new clutch). However the noise that i put down to either the DMF or clutch release bearing was still there.

On the mechanics report he has detailed "slight noise from gearbox" which im assuming is what he is referring too, and the gearbox is marked as faulty and unserviceable on the report.

All seems fine so far, however i have a check-up in 500 miles on the DMF, and i decided to post my sound up to an enthusiasts forum and see if anyone could guess (having told them i had done the dmf).

One guy suggested it was still the DMF, but claimed to not be an expert on the matter. Then another guy said he was a professional and said its definately the DMF. Which im assuming means (if he is correct) that the work hasn't been carried out or not done correctly.

I'm going to try and get more info from him on the matter, but i would like to know where i stand if he is right. What do i do about getting it rectified. I cannot prove the work was not done without paying for the work to be done again elsewhere and getting a report from the second centre and the old parts. But if this guy is wrong, then id be paying for a second one i don't need.

If anyone has any idea's i'd appreciate the input. I have a feeling im just going to have to decide whether to trust this guy and if so, get the repair done again and then try small claims or something to get my money back if he was right. "

a punto gearbox would give the noise you describe even after having the clutch and yawl replaced
why didnt you get box bearing reconditioned whilst they told you it was going and on the floor
you seam to be complaining that fitter didnt perform witchcraft on your gearbox and cure its evil whines

remember you dont say in your post that it was garage that diagnosed noise

    so
  • because i didn't know the gearbox was "faulty" until i got the report which was after the repairs was done, otherwise i would have asked for a quote on any additional work they could do to resolve the issue.

I'm not complaining the fitter didnt perform witchcraft, please re-read my post. What i said was the noise was still there even after the repair, which i assumed was down to a different issue, but ive been told that it still sounds like DMF by a professional, and therefore this concern has been raised.

At which point did i say the fitter had definitely not done the job. I did not say that and nor did i say i expected the fitter to repair anything outside the work i paid for. So please don't try to manipulate what i actually said as it de-rails my question.

The garage did not diagnose the issue, although when i went for a quote, i asked for a mechanic to come out to double check my suspicion and was asked to describe the problem. On describing the problem i was told it was the DMF (however i dont have that in writing so its a pointless diagnostic all the same).

The issue was diagnosed by 2 months of googling, video's, forum posts and personal opinions of some local mechanics after listening to the noise. However if the work has been done and done correctly and the issue is not the DMF (however confirming that one way or another is my initial problem), then i dont have a problem, as i asked for that specific work to be done and was not their recommendation that made me have it done.

    and whats the header say
  • I figure im not going to get a decent reply so i'll just bite. You seriously base your summary of my question on 6 words? Hell why did i even bother with all that text up there if all i need is a short header to get an answer.

you wrote the header not me
now what i would have done would have been take car to garage
    ask them to pinpoint noise
get them to confirm noise was dmf
    let them change it

    take it from there:)

i see header tried to be changed but you failed so it stands eh
Mechanic not done work paid for
mm so its their fault eh
  • Very unhelpful, thanks for killing me thread, i'll find somewhere else to ask, cheers

What car is it? Is it a Punto?

Someone diagnosing it over the net wont know 100% for sure.

They can only affoer suggestions of whats common or what it maybe in that area.

But without physical tests they will never be 100% sure.

Get a cheap stethoscope off ebay. Place it on the flywheel housing
    and then on the gearbox.

A very long, thin scredriver from the market will do as well.
The only way to really know if the DMF is on the way out, is for a mechanic to drive the car, or for the DMF to really start to fail - which means a clatter which you cannot ignore.
