Car Tax .... Help!!!!

Options
Is there anyway around this .....

I've just bought a second hand car and wanted to tax it tomorrow.

I have the MOT certificate, V5Cregistration document - which needs to be transfered over to my name/address.

I've just got the insurance online, will be sent out 1st class post to me, I guess on Monday.

How on earth can I get the car taxed ... without the renewal tax form??
I cannot do it on line, as car not yet registered to my name.

I don't think you can. But even if you could, you will lose a month straight away so you may as well wait until Monday (Oct 1st). It think the only way you can do it is at your nearest DVLA office.

Doubt it without the insurance certificate. Mind you they could email the certificate.

Can you get them to email them over then you can print the Insurance docs off, or are they close enough to go pick them up

The OP could take out a days temp insurance for around a tenner, print off the certificate and use this instead.

You need a V10 form, the new keeper's supplement (V5C2) from the V5C, the insurance certificate, the MOT and the payment.

Go to local post office. Provided it's within two business days of the month-end, you can tax it from 1st of following month.
If your vehicle is not taxed or has a SORN
If you apply in the last two working days of a month, the tax disc can start on the first day of the next month. If you apply before then, your tax disc will be backdated to the start of the current month. (Saturday is classed as a working day at Post Offi ce® branches.)
Your lack of an insurance certificate appears to be the issue which will prevent you taxing the vehicle today.

Can you do it online since you will have the reference number on the V5?

It's doubtful that the insurance co. will have updated MIDb to show it as insured.....but the online service will either say yes or no so it's certainly the first option to try.

Strictly speaking the OP needs to SORN the vehicle for September, which he can do online - because he can quote the V5C doc ref number, but IMHO he should quote the number on section 10 which has a 6 infront of it as he is the new keeper not the keeper named on the front of the V5C

    So IMHO you need to........
    1. SORN online first for September then
    2. TAX online for 1st OCTOBER

If it works that's ok, you can drive your car on Monday (without a tax disc in the window).... but must keep off the road before Monday - "Off the road" can be an unmaintained bit of ground, your own driveway or a carpark.

If online tax does not work then try to go back to your insurers websiite and see if you can print off a certificate. if you can then you tax at the PO on Sat to begin for Monday (stupid to pay tax for September now, but you must SORN instead)
  • You cannot tax online as you are not the registered keeper yet. So you won't get a tax disc sent to you.

You need to either wait for insurance certificate to come through the post, or print off a copy of the ins cert from website/email.

Take this to Post Office with the V5C (with your details filled out as the new keeper), the MOT and your payment. The PO will then forward the V5C to DVLA to update you as keeper.

If you want to use car today/tomorrow then you will need to buy a tax disc starting from Sept. If you can keep it off road for few days then buy a disc starting from Oct then you can drive it from Monday.

    HTH.
