Responsible breeding any rules

Hi, as there are a couple of recent threads about buying puppies and breeding etc I thought I would let others know of our experience of buying a pedigree pup (CKC) firstly we wanted a dog with a good temperament as DS was only 7. We found a breeder with a litter they were only 5 weeks so we chose one and named him there and then, left a teddy with him so when he eventually came home with us he still had his teddy and knew his name( so did the rest of the litter lol) We paid his deposit then went back and collected him at 9 wks and finished paying for him, the terms of us having him was that we could not breed from him unless we got the breeders permission and that if our circumstances ever changed they would take him back ( as they also had a rescue for GSD's) which I thought was good as you never know. 11 years later we still have him thank goodness but if he ever misbehaves very rarely ;) I still threaten to take him back :D do other breeders do this? as I thought it was a responsible thing to do even though he was paid for and not a rescue dog any thoughts?

That is standard practice for reputable breeders.

Yep this is what any decent breeder would do, I have restrictions on breeding my boy, if I decide I want to he must be hip, elbow scored and blood tested.

I remain in weekly contact with his breeders via phone and met them last week. He is only 11 weeks old just now but when old enough he is going to start ring craft, his breeders are the chairpeople of the German shepherd dog club of Scotland.

My sister bred from her girl 11 years ago, her contract stated that if anything went wrong then the dogs were to go back to her, she is also still in touch with the families that took the pups. She did only breed from her the once, did all the health checks, took ages to find the right stud dog, the pups at 8 weeks old were almost house trained, she took them out regularly in her car, took them to the vets and had quite a few people to visit and handle them when they were old enough. Unfortunately her girl died of cancer when she was only six and the pup that my sister kept died earlier this year, I miss both of them, they were great ambassadors for their breed.
  • Hi all thanks for your replies, I am pleased to find out that this is normal practice, as I am more familiar with rescue animals proceedure, thanks again
  • You will only get breeders who do take their animals back answering here, those you dont, and there are plenty of them, aren't going to admit to it on a public forum.
We had 2 young Persian cats come in to us,where the breeder refused to take the cats back when the new owner had a stroke. Both cats were so inbred , that although they were only about one, they needed most of their teeth out before we could rehome them. Their top and bottom jaws didn't even line up.
DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.
