We've just found a tin in the basement from last year. It's been kept in a cool dark place and is still sealed. I do intend to open it and check for any whiteness etc of the chocolate. From my google research it seems as though they should still be ok to consume. Any thoughts?
It's heartbreaking to throw a whole tin of chocs away but I don't want to take any risks

More likely to get sick because you eat them all at once , than because they are past their best before date0

Stop eating them ..... send them to me I will dispose of them for youThrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End
You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time0 -

Ooh, I really don't think you should eat them. Food poison is a terrible thing to go through.
I seriously reccommend that you send them directly to me and I promise I shall get rid of them whilst watching corrie tonight!0 -
blimey how did that happen ? I've got an in-built highly sensitive chocolate detector that can alert me to confectionery upto one kilometer away, through one-meter thick lead-lined walls. Haven't you got one of those ? !!!
enjoy your chocs, I'm sure they'll taste all the better for being allowed to mature.

Should be fine ... especially if there happened to be a flux capacitor lying next to it in the basement too.0
