How to get extra ethernet ports?

I have a Talktalk d-link DSL2680 router in my study which has 2 ethernet ports, 1 is used to connect my main PC and the other goes to my powerline adapters which goes to the lounge for my Raspberry Pi.
I want to get a NAS so need another port, am I better off buying a new router that has 4 ports (if so which one?) or a network switch such as this one for a fiver:

I realise a switch will be cheaper but does splitting 1 port into 5 mean that each of the 5 ports only runs at 20% speed?

Thanks.

  • "Splitting" one port into 5 does not mean the speed goes down, we have fitted many network switches in various places.

Is the router the one supplied by your provider? If so then changing it could be complicated (information stored in it) and your only real choice would be a switch. If it is one you bought then it might be simpler with less clutter to replace it.

That said, have you checked if you can add another powerline adaptor, with many types this is possible.

  • My router was provided by talk talk, but i expect i could take the settings from it and put them in a new router if necessary.
I think i could get another power line adapter but that would mean my NAS was connected on a slower connection as when accessing it from my pc it would be using the slower power line connection.
Thanks for clearing up that splitting will not slow it down.

All you need is the ISP username and password which can be obtained from the automated system via phone if you want to change your router. TT's are ususally in the form of:-

    username - phonenumber@talktalk.net

password - K5M3K4P6....12 characters in all IIRC, Caps/num repeated

You will also need to set:-

    authentication type - PPPoE/PPPoA

    VCI - 0 and 38

    MTU - 1432

    within the replacement router :)

In all fairness TT are still an easy ISP to use your own kit on :)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • As GunJack said, you can change routers - when I took out phone + broadband with TalkTalk, I bought a NetGear 834 router, which has 4 Ethernet ports and WiFi on it.

Changing the router will (in most cases) give you a maximum of 4 ports. Adding a switch increases the number of available ports by 3 (4 port switch) or 7 (8 port switch), and is the cheaper option too.
How do I add a signature?
  • I am currently thinking that the switch is the best option, it wont slow down the extra ports I gain and is cheaper.
    Thanks for all the help.
