No, I got the link thanks.

The difference between that link and the one I replied to was that the second one had a scanner which told me what was compatible with what I already have - and that's a bit of a comfort to a complete technophobe like myself.

I think this 20% discount this weekend has rather panicked me into thinking I've got to buy something while it's cheap.
Perhaps I'd be better off leaving it and seeing if anyone I know feels competent to replace bits on my old pc instead.
I wish I had the confidence just to take it apart and chuck some new bits in, but I'm shaking in my boots at the very thought of doing it myself.

    :(

I suppose that's why most people just go out and buy a new one.

Adding RAM and perhaps a graphics card is easier than you might imagine.
I too was nervous when I thought bout changing parts. Ludicrously simple.
Your processor, whilst awful, is actually better than the one on my main PC. But mine is running Windows 7 Ultimate on 2GB of RAM.
So there is headroom for improvement with your PC for not much outlay.
    What did Crucial recommend?

    Ok, it says this -

"We were not able to determine the manufacturer and/or model of your PC, but we were able to complete our scan with information from your motherboard.
Guaranteed-compatible upgrades for your MSI (Micro Star) MS-7142 (K8MM-V) Motherboard
    "

Then there's 2 pictures of like washing up bowls.
One has '512MB' in it, the other one is 'empty'.

Then it suggests putting another 512MB in the empty bowl at a cost of £14, or 1GB for £23, or replacing the 512MB with 1GB plus 1GB in the spare bowl for £46 (these are rounded prices).

    Hope that makes sense!

Anyway, I've decided not to be bumped into buying a laptop this weekend just because they're cheap.

If that's correct, you have 512 installed, not 192.

1GB in total for xp should be enough, so add another 512 - ND will probably point you to something cheaper.

the task manager physical ram total will confirm how much you have, and commit charge peak, how much would be useful to have.

Those 'washing up bowls' represent the memory slots. The scan reports you only have 512MB of RAM. You'll achieve best performance by removing the 512MB and replacing with 2 x 1GB

Maybe the one real advantage of a laptop is there's nowhere for spiders to hide!

I have read that thread in the past.
I do scan for malware, do the cleanup thing and defrag from time to time.

I'm pushed for time today, but will do the hijack thing in the next couple of days and post it here.

I wouldn't place any faith in the Crucial Tool. If the OP says it says 192MB, I would rather believe them.

64MB is reserved for graphics, leaving 192MB RAM.

If he opens CCleaner it will show what is installed there.
