Bonnet catches, for people who find the standard bonnet release mechanism adds too much weight.

Also stick-on ones for people who want to look like the people who find the standard bonnet release mechanish adds too much weight, but can't be bothered to do any hard work.

In practice, using them on a road car means your car will probably loose even more weight when someone steals your battery and the ridiculous cold air induction kit you almost certainly have.
  • i was thinking how heavy could a bonnet catch be. i guess when you have the lever at the drivers foot well, the mechanism would be very long and heavy

Used in racing cars for quick release in the event of fire (along with a power cut off switch).
  • People buy them for the same reason that they buy:
    -Body kits.
    -Aftermarket spoilers.
    -19" alloys (for a 700kg hatchback).
    -2000W subwoofers.
-8" diameter twin exhaust back boxes, to connect to the mid section of their 2" bore mild steel single exhaust.

Because their favourite flavour of ice cream is window.
  • Not so much the weight of the bonnet catch, but if they've replaced the bonnet itself with a fibreglass one, they usually aren't strong enough to deal with the spring-loaded standard catch. I haven't watched the video so I don't know if that shows a proper need or a wannabe.

@londontiger - no, it's usually a thin cable like a bicycle brake cable that pulls the catch on the slam panel.

If your using bonnet pins properly it is four of them holding down a lightweight (glassfibre or aluminium) copy of the bonnet that means you can pop all four pins and have full access to all parts of the engine in 5 seconds. No other catches or cables required.

It also stops the front corners of the bonnet lifting at speed.
The cables are just to hold the split pins in place so you don't lose them.

Utterly pointless (and dangerous) on a road car, IMO, because of the injuries they could cause to a pedestrian.

not hoses they are cables http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/bonnet-pins-fasteners/omp-aluminium-bonnet-pin-kit, they hold the bonnet down. so you can remove the heavy catch, use a light weight bonnet with out the risk of wind getting under and lifting the bonnet off it's catch, also quicker to get access to the engine bay
these are old skool the new skool are flush fit http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/bonnet-pins-fasteners/aerocatch-panel-fasteners
