How much for a 3 bed semi?
Options
I know this is a very vague question, but please forgive me.
I live in a three bed semi. It is quite a small semi (seventies whimpey build) and only myself and daughter live in it.
We have combined electricty and gas from powergen. My bill for the winter months (nov - march) was £328 a big increase from £216 last year. I had expected an increase, but not in this region. I phoned and got it changed to a better tarriff the extra saver and hope this helps.
The house is double glazed and the loft is well insulated. We have the heating on for three hours in the morning and four in the evening. In some cold snaps/ school holidays it may be on longer or we may use the gas fire. Hot water on for the same time. I have now turned heating off because of the warm spell. I know my boiler is fairly old, but as I need to do other and more urgent things to the house, I cannot upgrade it just now.
I am a single parent and am beginning to find the bill very high.
What is usual for a house of this size?

We're a family of 4 in similar house. We are on monthly budget scheme with Powergen and pay £61 per month for gas and £40 per month electric.
This has recently gone up to these figures to cover rises in price.
If you estimate we're paying 1200 quid a year, it might give you an idea of your increase?
Hope this is of some help to you.0 -
Thank you, that was helpful. Do you know how much of an increase this was on last year?0

2 of us in a 3 bed townhouse. 2 years old and well insulated. Dual fuel with scottish power and cost is approx £58 per month in total. I am home all day and input my readings about once a month. I get an instant bill so I don`t get any surprises
I just added up the various amounts and from beginning nov to end of march was a total of £297
half of our house faces south and it seems to retain the warmth so the heating is off all day now but will go on on grim days
If I think I am going to go over my yearly allowance then I will just ring sp and ask them to increase the monthly dd by an appropriate amount0 -
Thanks kittie. I had a patio door in the south facing hall way of my last house and it really helped with the heating bills. I pay monthly dd, but can't really afford for it to increase from the current £62.0

Hi Prudent,
I also found my energy bills quite difficult to comprehend!!
Last year Powergen had some hefty price increases. They have had the largest Gas increase out of the big 6 suppliers.
Elec price jump last year: 18.4% & 9.7%
Gas price jump last year: 24.4% & 18.4%
So you can imagine, for example if your Direct Debit at the start of 2006 was £50 p/m Elec & £50 p/m Gas. Your new prices would be (not including recent price decrease) £64.94 Elec & £73.64 Gas wef 21/08/06.
In essence with the example above that would have been roughly an extra £40 a month or £120 per quarter.. This is roughly a reflection on your current bill..
Hope that makes sense, can't really articulate concisely!!
TaffNeed is something you have to have
Want is something you would like to have0 -
Got a 3 bed bungalow with 2 of us and use 3500Kwh for electric(£25 a month) and about 12000Kwh for gas(£21 a month), guess yours should be less for a house.0

Thanks Taff, that made sense.0

Hi there...
It can be extreamly difficult for us to say wether your bill is over the top or not, there is really no national average as per say however, looking at you bill and from my past experiance it looks like a normal winter bill, there are plenty of ways to save money on your bills. Instead of turning up the heating, wear a jumper etc, simple things that can really save you alot of money.. If you need to add alot of cold water to you bath when run, then turn the thermostate down etc...Hey folks...remember I might work for the company but I am a human and working in my own time, I will not responde to people who are rude, sarcy and crits me. My views and comments do not reflect British Gas and they are totally unreasponsable for my responses.0
