De Vere Hotel chain and hidden fees

I booked some rooms last week online with De Vere, the large hotel chain. I paid with my credit card and received an email of the confirmation.

Yesterday I received my credit card bill and found I had been hit with charges for using my credit card. Not only that, but charged a fee for each room I booked, even though it went through as one amount on my card.

Are companies still allow to hide credit card charges? It did not show up on my payment details online so I was unaware of any such fees.

I contacted them today and they told me that in their (many) terms and conditions, it states a small fee may be charged.

I am surprised this behaviour is still happening and is the first time I have ever been caught out by hidden charges.

So everyone, beware of booking De Vere Hotels online

It's not a hidden charge, I found it in one minute in the payment options. It's normal for a CC to have a fee, for now.

How is it hidden? Can you show it hidden?
  • On the first page of their Ts and Cs there's a big heading that says 'The Price You Pay' and under that heading it says:

A transaction fee will be applied to all bookings made with a credit card in order to cover costs the credit card companies charge us. All credit cards will be charged at £2.50. This information is displayed at step 3 of the booking process under the Payment Details section before you confirm your reservation. The fee will be applied to the entire booking rather than per room and it is not refundable. Payment by debit card is free.

If they've charged you the credit card fee for each room then you should complain to them pointing out the above statement from their own Terms and Conditions and ask for the extra £2.50 to be refunded.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!
